The first top ten in 2016 starts with a lie. A bloody lie! This is not a top ten, it’s a top fourteen you crazy fool.
Ah, OK, here’s my top 14 of my most anticipated games of 2016 then. Not entirely in order by the way. Sorry for that.
$1.800.000. That could become a heavy burden, but I think Stonemaier Games is able to handle it. The game looks incredible, the theme sounds interesting and the gameplay (4X) very cool. A friend of mine backed the project, so hopefully we can play it later in the year.
2: Seafall / Chronicles: Origins
Pandemic LEGACY is regarded by many as THE game of 2015 and Rob Daviau is involved in two new legacy style games that come out in 2016. In Seafall he focusses more on exploration and the other threes x’s, expand, exploit and exterminate, while in Chronicles you will develop your culture from the dawn of man to later times, with Origins as the first part of your own epic story.
Both games sound incredibly interesting. They have themes that are a perfect fit for a LEGACY game. At least, I think so. Looking forward to seeing and playing one, or both of them.
Will 2016 be the year? Maybe Consequential will happen, maybe it won’t. Who knows.
It’s a cooperative adventure boardgame where you use an app to tell the story. The decisions you make have an impact on the story that’s been told. You get the first part of the story with the base game, but you’ll have to buy the next chapters via adventure packs. The idea is great, but I’ll have to wait for the Kickstarter campaign before I can get a real good idea about what the game’s about.
4: Attack on Titan
I loved the Attack on Titan animated series, plus this game is designed by two great designers, Anoine Bauza and Ludovic Maublanc.
It’s an asymmetrical dice game where one player plays as the titan and each other player plays as one of the human characters from the show. The titan has to eat humans or destroy the tower. The human players have to defeat the titan.
Sounds great, very thematic, and I can’t wait to play it.
5: Clockwork Islands
Well, I couldn’t find a lot of information about this game and sadly no information was added to the BGG page since last year, when I put this game on my ‘most anticipated list of 2015’ (only in my head though), but the idea of exploring a mysterious island worker placement style intrigues me.
6: Victorian Masterminds
Eric M. Lang and Antoine Bauza come with a game set in, Sherlock Holmes free, Victorian times. It might not come out in 2016, but I don’t care. Sabotage, build death-machines or kidnap people. Just do evil stuff as one of the Victorian masterminds. It’s a euro game, it’s still in development, but the bits that Eric Lang showed at bgg.con look interesting.
In Lisbao, a new game from Vital Lacerda, players rebuild the city after an earthquake. It seems to revolve around clever card play, which is right up my alley, but the fact that the description on BGG states that the game ends after four rounds and players take one turn per round frightens me a bit. I need a little bit more information.
8: Dragonsgate College
I don’t know much about this one outside the fact that it’s a dice building game and it’s about dungeon crawling. It sort of takes place in a Hogwarts-like school. You represent one of the houses of the school and you try to improve facilities and make you members more skillful.
That sound nice enough for me.
9: Ein Fest für Odin
It’s a new Uwe Rosenberg. That means you’ve got my attention. A mix of worker placement and pattern building with a Viking theme. OK, to be honest, I don’t have any clue how that’s going to work out, but the prototype pictures make me curious to say the least.
Quadropolis, a city-building game which uses a clever mechanism to buy and place the building tiles on your player board. The buildings give you different scoring opportunities, but you need energy and workers to power them. However, not too much or otherwise you are polluting the environment. It has been done before, city-building, and with success, but this one looks nice too, so we’ll see what it brings.
In Histrio from Christian Martinez and Bruno Cathala you are creating a play. It may be a tragedy or a comedy. It all depends on the mood of the king. Players play cards to go to certain locations, to recruit actors or get secret objectives. If you recruited the actors for the right type of play, you get points.
It looks like a light to medium-light card game and it’s from Bruno, so I can’t wait to check it out.
12: Steam Ship Company
A new game from Mac Gerdts where players invest in Steam Ship Companies, hence the name, and act as industrialists. It does sound a bit like Imperial (2030) and I’m not the biggest fan of that one (played it only once though). It’s a good game, I just did not enjoy it very much. However, I do like Concordia a lot, so I hope he mixes some of that idea into Steam Ship Company too. I’m willing to give it the benefit of the doubt.
13: Admiral of the Black
You’re a captain. Of a ship.
A 3D ship.
And there are timers.
There’s an app.
How it exactly works, I don’t know, but it looks and sounds fun.
A dice placement game! I like that. It has a spy theme, which is nice. However I do hope that it does bring something new and not only has the regular dice placement rules, like Alien Frontiers, where you have to place two equal dice there to get a good and have to place two more dice, higher than four, in that spot to get another good, and you use them for something to get points. Although I do like Alien Frontiers a lot, just give me something new. Please.
